<概要/Course Content Summary>

The goal of this course is to help students apply the English they were taught in high school to discussions and presentations related to science and engineering. The course will focus on computer-assisted presentations (e.g., using PowerPoint or Keynote to make short presentations to a group), but will also include small-group discussions as well as poster presentation (e.g., creating a poster to present the results of an experiment). Anti-COVID-19 measures (e.g., on-demand online classes) may limit or prevent the usual small-group discussions.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

After successfully completing this course students will: possess a better appreciation of the importance of English for scientists and engineers; have improved their ability to use English to communicate scientific findings to an audience; have increased their ability to precisely and logically present research results.

<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>

attendance and active participation  35%  Attendance at all class meetings is required -- merely attending class does not constitute participation. If the class rarely meets due to an online, on-demand format, these points will be split between the next two categories.
main presentations  50%  Students will be required to deliver at least two 10-minute oral presentations as well as one poster.
various homework  15%  other homework will also be assigned

The grading scheme is tentative and subject to change. For a purely on-demand style course, expect the main presentations to account for approximately 70% of the grade and the other homework to account for 30%.
