<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course will cover many issues related to scientific writing and writing scientific reports, such as the overall structure of a typical report, forming hypotheses and research questions,describing methods, collecting and presenting data in tables and graphs, and analyzing and discussing results.There are many opportunities for students to work with their partner in speaking and writing activities, and to ask questions to the instructor.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the structure of a scientific report and to help them develop organizational, outlining, and writing skills for writing scientific reports such as laboratory reports. 
 
Students who complete this course are expected to develop the following knowledge, techniques, and skills: 
 
Knowledge: 
Understand the purpose and structure of a scientific report  
Understand the purpose and structure of its four main sections: introduction, methods, results, and discussion 
Read model reports to develop knowledge of the structure and language of scientific reports 
Write with reasonable coherence and cohesion 
Use formatting conventions common in scientific writing 
 
Techniques: 
Conduct an experiment and, with support from peers and instructor, write a scientific report of the experiment 
Proofread one's own as well as other people's work 
 
Skills: 
Develop fluency and confidence in using English for scientific purposes 
 
The small class size gives students the chance to interact with classmates, teaching assistants, and the instructor. It is hoped that this will give students a positive attitude to studying English.

<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>

Attendance & verbal participation  20%  Attendance at all classes is required. Students are expected to participate in class by speaking with the instructor and classmates and listening carefully. 
Homework & assignments  30%  Short homework assignments are given to review the class and prepare for the next class.  
 
 
Experiment reports  50%  There are two graded laboratory reports worth 25% each
