<概要/Course Content Summary>

The course takes the students step-by-step through the process of conducting, speaking about, and writing about simple experiments. There are many opportunities for students to work with their partner in speaking and writing activities, and to ask questions to the instructor.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

The aim of AES 2 is to help students understand the theory and practice of conducting simple scientific experiments and develop the ability to report about such experiments verbally and in simple written form.

Students who complete this course are expected to develop the following knowledge, techniques, and skills

Knowledge:
Understand the scientific method and the purpose of research
Understand the structure and function of hypothesis statements and research questions
Express hypothesis statements and research questions
Understand the function of variables, conditions, and trials, and use this understanding when planning simple classroom experiments
Describe the procedure for collecting data (i.e., the methodology)
Interpret, present, and describe results
Reflect on research results

Techniques:
Plan an experiment to test a hypothesis or explore a research question
Conduct an experiment to collect data and make observations during the experiment

Skills:
Develop fluency and confidence in using English

The small class size gives students the chance to interact with classmates, teaching assistants, and the instructor. It is hoped that this will give students a positive attitude to studying English.
