<概要/Course Content Summary> After the devastation by World War II, Japan has achieved a remarkable growth and become the second largest economic power in 1968 and maintained this position until 2010 when it was overtaken by China. Much of the Japan’s robust economic growth has been sustained by the distinctive Japanese business practices which derive from the country’s unique history, geographical features, demographics and socio-cultural value system. Since the 1990s, however, Japan has lost its momentum for further growth due to the changing business environment such as appreciation of yen value, globalization of world economy and evolution of information technology. Accordingly, Japanese companies have been renovating the traditional business practices and taking variety of new strategic approaches. In this course, we will study those distinctive Japanese business practices and how they have worked to the advantage for realizing the post-war economic growth and how Japanese companies are responding to the changing business environment today. The instructor for this course has worked for a Japanese electronics firm for 30 years and some of the lectures and discussion will be based on this experience. Besides regular lectures, the course includes case-studies of Japanese companies. <到達目標/Goals,Aims> Students taking this course will learn important background and practical knowledge of Japan’s distinctive business practices. By participating in various exercises in the course, students should be able to assess each aspect of Japanese business practices and find out whether the same principles can be applied to business in a different culture. <授業計画/Schedule>
