<概要/Course Content Summary>
In recent years, businesses embracing the notion that “green” is important. There may be various reasons for this, but it may simply boil down to our recognition that the planet is crowded and that collectively we are putting increasing stress on the world’s resources and threatening the planet’s life support systems. With expanding business activities, green management is demanded by various sources, including societal mandates incorporated into laws, treaties, and regulations, and fear of loss of corporate sales and reputation if management does not have a tangible commitment to green management. Therefore, simply increasing corporate profit is not enough; business managers today are expected by society to take environment in the decision making processes, using the resources wisely and responsibly. In this course, we will first review the fundamentals of green management (i.e., What does it mean to be green?). We will then go over examples of businesses incorporating green management and examine them from the perspectives of different stakeholders (e.g., government, scientists, consumers). In doing so, we ask the questions such as the following: Can corporate profit and environmental choices have compatible goals? Does green management really “pay”? Are green management practices really good for the environment? In addition to the lecture (use of Powerpoint slides, visual and audio material), students will be expected to participate actively in discussions, exercises (use of computer software), and presentations (use of Powerpoint slides).
