<概要/Course Content Summary>

The strategic management of organizations is a complex undertaking, which starts with the central question, “Why do some firms enjoy above average returns and some do not?” The course offers fundamentals on how to manage organizations strategically. 
Strategic management is not only geared for a company to realize profit. Rather, it has much broader applications across the organizations in our society. The course also tries to be relevant to the students who may plan to be associated with non-profit organizations.  
In this course, the case method will be used to combine theory and application. The course will seek to sharpen your ability to think logically. It will also help you learn to diagnose situations from a strategic point of view. 
The course aims to develop your own way of strategic thinking to prepare you for the unpredictable future.

While the ultimate goal is to help students understand, internalize, and apply strategic management in their professional and even personal life. The course aims to develop your own way of strategic thinking to prepare you for the unpredictable future based on the theoretical frameworks learned from textbook, actual past business cases, and from individual students’ experiences. 
Students who successfully complete this course will have: 
 
Knowledge:  
- You will be able to understand the fundamentals of strategic management. 
- You will be able to discuss the relationship between business strategy and the various issues our globalized societies face.  
 
Skills:  
- You will gain basic skills to analyze and formulate business and corporate strategies. 
- You will be able to advance your skills to analyze complex and unstructured problems. 
- You will gain skills to analyze business cases critically and creatively. 
- You will learn how to clearly articulate ideas and present with confidence and purpose as an individual and within your group.  
 
Competence: 
- The course will help you develop capability to comprehend and evaluate information presented logically.  
- The course will help you enhance your attitude in diagnosing situations from a strategic point of view.

Class Attendance and Discussions: 20%  
Students are expected to be on time, to participate actively and add meaningful insights to discussions. Students should read textbook and cases thoroughly in order to discuss in class.  
 
Written Assignments: 30%  
Students are required to read the cases and assigned textbook chapters and answer the review questions before class. Students should submit these answers and will be graded on level of understanding of the text and should completely and thoroughly answer the questions.  
 
Mid-term Group Presentation: 20% (15-20 minutes per group + Q&A)  
Students will be grouped into teams to take concepts and principles learned in Chapters 1-5 of the textbook and apply them to real world examples of companies they are familiar with, excluding companies included in the case studies and cases available for the final presentation. All students are expected to participate and contribute equally to their group’s project.  
 
Evaluation Criteria for Mid-term Presentation  
• Smart application of Frameworks and Models 
• Originality and Creativity  
• Critical analysis and practical recommendations  
• Clear, confident and concise presentation  
 
Final Group Presentation: 30% (15-20 minutes per group + Q&A)  
Students will continue in the groups formed for the mid-term presentation to take concepts and principles and create an in- depth analysis of what they learned in the course and apply it to 1 of 6 cases. All students are expected to participate and contribute equally to their group’s project. Evaluation criteria will follow the same structure as the mid-term presentation.
