<概要/Course Content Summary>
This course explores contemporary Japanese culture and society by focusing on the shifting conditions of marginalized groups. Japan is often framed--by people inside and outside its borders--as a "homogeneous society". However, students will be asked to think critically about Japan by moving beyond stereotypical notions of homogeneity and "Japaneseness" to examine its demographic diversity. NOTE: This course will be offered through live streaming (using Zoom) during the scheduled time period. Classes will be recorded and made available for a limited time to students who are unable to attend classes. However, as in-class discussions and exercises are an important component, this course is recommended for students who are available during the scheduled time period. * The level of English required to take this course is higher than for "Special Topics in Sociology III", and there are registration requirements. To register for Contemporary Japanese Culture and Society, you must meet (or have the equivalent level of) one of the criteria below.
