＜概要/Course Content Summary＞
This is a topic-based course for upper intermediate students who would like to discuss contemporary issues in politics, economics, and society among others. Ideas and issues will be introduced through vocabulary, listening and reading exercises. This will be followed by a range of speaking activities including surveys, debates and of course discussions. Some of these may be carried out online.
Participation and and reports contribute to the final assessment.
Students will need a strong command of English to cope with the preparatory exercises and to participate effectively in discussions.
There is no textbook. Discussion materials will be distributed before each lesson.

At the end of the course, students should find they have greater skill and confidence talking about a range of contemporary issues. Their ability to understand written and spoken texts in these areas should also improve.

Given the unstable situation regarding Covid 19, this course will be taught completely online. Students will be provided with discussion materials well in advance of an online lesson. These should be studied carefully so students are able to fully take part in an online discussion. Other assignments will be sent through the DUET message board.

Students must attend online classes devoted to debates and discussion.
The mid term and end of term task will be a contentious topic which a student must argue for or against. Students will be given time to construct their argument from data, expert opinion, their own insights, and argumentation. Once this is done, a student must record their argument and submit it for assessment.
