【Objectives・Course Content and Methodology】
Objectives:
This course is to investigate the current state of energy resource development and mining in Northeast Asian countries and associated socio-ecological problems. It highlights the inequality of mineral resources development at regional, national, and local scales. This course gives the possibilities for deeper understanding the factors and mechanisms affecting such an inequality. It highlights the possibilities for cooperation within Northeast Asia and necessity for socially responsible and ecologically sustainable mineral resources development for better future of this macro region.
  Course Content and Methodology:
Northeast Asia possesses very rich mineral-resources potential. However, one can observe the inequality of mineral resource development effected by geographic, economic and political factors. At the same time, such an inequality gives the possibilities for economic cooperation within Northeast Asia.
Currently, the criteria of profitability in natural resource sector of economy, chiefly due to competitiveness of natural resources products in the world market, has been dominant in Russia, Mongolia and Northeast China and it has not evolved into the achievement of harmonious coordination of economic, social and ecological outcomes. Mechanisms have to be elaborated and implemented in Northeast Asian countries to mitigate negative social and ecological consequences of energy resources development and mining industry management.
This course is based on the world natural resources data, the official statistics of Northeast Asian countries, the data of the mineral resources development companies, and the field observation of the live reality of mineral resources development in Northeast Asian countries from socio-ecological viewpoint.

All classes of this course are on-demand (video distribution) type.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

Students will obtain knowledge and practice maps about current state and the future of energy resource development and mining in Northeast Asian countries (Eastern Russia, Mongolia, Northeast China, Japan, and South Korea). They will study common features and specificity of mineral resources development in individual countries as well as the economic cooperation and integration within Northeast Asia.
Students will learn positive and negative social and ecological consequences of mineral resources development in the countries of Northeast Asia. Students will get knowledge about new mechanisms have to be devised and implemented to move to more mature economy so that precious mineral resources, natural environment and multiethnic culture of Northeast Asian countries can be sustained for the generations to come.
