＜概要/Course Content Summary＞

This will be a rigorous, seminar-style class intended to explore the closely related topics of: (1) identity and how it is defined and authenticated through legal and regulatory structures, and (2) the growing importance of data privacy legislation and their impact on business. Students will be required to do research into and report on data protection regimes around the world. It will be a high level class that assumes students have a certain level of knowledge about law, legal concepts, business and comparative law. Students should be prepared to do extensive reading in English (and Japanese, if possible), as well as engage in discussions, give presentations and write a suitable seminar thesis. 　
　
Course content and coverage will depend on number of students and their interest.

By taking this class students should expect to achieve　
1. An appreciation of identity as a legal concept, particularly with respect to Japanese law 　
2. An understanding of the issues and concerns underlying data privacy regulation　
3. A basic understanding information security and how it relates to data protection　
4. The approach towards data protection regulation adopted by some key jurisdictions, including Japan, the European Union, the United States and others of interest to students,
