<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course is designed to offer an introduction to Japanese politics at graduate level. We will begin by examining modern Japanese political history. Then we will explore how the institutions of Japanese government including prime minister, legislators, bureaucrats, and the judiciary function. The second-half of the semester will be devoted to studying political science methodology to develop and examine hypotheses about causal mechanisms.

This course is also intended to accomplish two other broad purposes. First, through the relevant literature in political science, students will learn how political scientists approach the study of Japanese politics. Second, we will analyse current issues in Japanese politics through the medium of newspaper articles and other sources on the Internet. Together these will lay the groundwork for further social scientific study for graduate degrees.

All students who take this course are required to be fluent in both written and spoken English.
