＜概要/Course Content Summary＞
Ⅰ．Course objectives (講義目的)
The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to some basic issues of the UNITED NATIONS (UN) while giving students a good opportunity to practice and improve their English language skills. The topics to be studied are basic issues facing the UN such as the veto power of the five permanent members，Japan's membership, PKO, Gulf War, humanitarian intervention，the right of self-defense, the UN reform.
Ⅱ．Course policies (授業方針)
１．This class will be conducted in Japanese and English.
(基本的に日本語と英語で授業を進める)
This class will be taught in Japanese and English. Therefore， it is recommended only for students with basic English skills and who are willing to study very hard. Perfect English ability is not necessary because the class will be taught at a slow pace and will be taught in Japanese if necessary. However， the lower a student’s English ability， the harder he or she will have to work. Students are required to do reading assignments (book chapters, journal articles, legal cases) before each session.Assignments will be provided during the 1st class or one week before each session.
２．Regular attendance is required.

ATTENDANCE IS ESSENTIAL AND REQUIRED. A student who is absent from FIVE or more sessions will not receive credit for this course. Two late arrivals are counted as one absence. Leaving the classroom without permission is strictly prohibited.
３．Seats are assigned.

A student is required to sit in his or her assigned seat during every session.
４．A Quiz will be given in several sessions.
(小テストを実施する)
A quiz will be held in several sessions. The purpose of the quiz is to see how much a student has learned. There will be no final examination for this course.
These policies are subject to change due to the number of students.
Presentation can be a class requirement for this course.
