<概要/Course Content Summary> This lecture course traces the evolution of Asia-Pacific Relations from mid-19th century up to today. During mid-19th century, East Asia met serious challenge from the West. Over time, among western powers, the United States and Russia/Soviet were most influential in determining the destiny of East Asian nations. It is no coincidence that both US and Russia happened to become Pacific Power by mid-19th Century and became important stake holders of the region. The course will review how East Asian nations restored autonomy and began a century of Asia-Pacific region along with other Pacific powers. <到達目標/Goals,Aims> To acquire a solid understanding of international relations and to avoid unnecessary drifting in your understanding of current IR, you need to acquire necessary historical understanding. Asia-Pacific region is especially important because the region increasingly became a central stage of current IR. <授業計画/Schedule>
The course is designed for class room sessions. But, considering the current COVID-19 situation, if participating students consider on line lectures safer or convenient, we may switch to it or mix with class room sessions. We will discuss the matter at the first class room session. <成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>
