<概要/Course Content Summary> For this class, the textbook is The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language (1861),a collection of around 300 short poems written between the early 1500s and the mid-1800s. It is the most famous and successful anthology of English poetry ever published. Each week we discuss the language and ideas of between two and four poems. The ideas,we find, are usually timeless and universal: ideas about love, death, happiness, loss, growing up,the countryside, and other fundamental elements of human experience. There will be a vote to decide which poems are studied in this class. <到達目標/Goals,Aims> This will be a four skills class, with a particular emphasis on reading and listening. Students should be able to develop a love of poetry and an understanding of cultural difference. <授業計画/Schedule>
The schedule is very flexible. In Week 4 students will vote on the poems they would like to study in the rest of the course, and I will draw up a full schedule then. <成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>
