<概要/Course Content Summary>

This is a continuation of the spring course: As the textbook states: “this [class] is intended as a comprehensive and modern introduction to bilingual education, bilingualism and multilingualism (as bilingualism often includes multilingualism). Written from a multidisciplinary perspective, the [class] covers a wide range of topics: individual and societal concepts in minority and majority languages; childhood developmental perspectives; general bilingual education issues; bilingual classrooms, and political and ideological perspectives. Bilingualism and multilingualism relates to, for example, the use of two or more communication systems, identity and personality, globalization and assimilation, thinking and reading, education and employment, politics and culture.” (p. ix)

In addition, one of the main ideas of this class is that each Doshisha student is, to varying degrees, bilingual. Therefore, we will take a look at a range of issues concerning bilingualism and biculturalism within the Japanese context. Some of the topics dealt with will be, but not limited to, immersion education (see http://www.bi-lingual.com/School/Japanese/WhatIsImmersionJP.htm), content-based language learning, bilingual development and the issues of returnees or third culture kids (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_culture_kids). As a father of two bilingual, third culture children, this instructor believes he has some unique, first-hand insights into these issues. We will look at these selected topics through articles, newspapers and other materials provided by the instructor.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

At the end of the class, the Doshisha student will show increased awareness of bilingualism and bilingual education.
