<概要/Course Content Summary> This semester will round off and complete your study of British musical theatre, while also giving you some useful background that you can make use of in your graduation thesis. We will now go back in time to learn about the early development of British musical theatre. This will be done in two stages, first looking at the "Age of Operetta" from 1850 to 1900, then going further back to the "Age of Ballad Opera" from 1720 to 1860. We'll look at key works from each period, such as The Mikado (1885),which for many years was the most profitable theatrical work in the world, and the The Beggar's Opera (1728),which has often been described as "the first musical." During most of this period there was no clear distinction between an "opera" and what we now call a "musical." The style of the class will be the same as in Junior Seminar, but we'll now be dealing with more difficult texts. <到達目標/Goals,Aims> This is again a four-skills class: you will be doing a lot of reading, listening, and discussing, and in conclusion you will write your graduation thesis on one of the musicals or operas you have studied in the class. By the end of this semester you should have a good understanding of the whole history of British musical theatre and the tensions it has created between art and entertainment. You should have further developed critical skills useful for appreciating and evaluating any theatrical work. <授業計画/Schedule>
