<概要/Course Content Summary>

This class is a continuation of the first semester. This second semester, however, we will focus mainly, but not exclusively, on second language acquisition — something a lot of people have trouble with:
and bilingualism:

•How does second language acquisition differ from first language acquisition?
•What different ideas do language researchers have about second language learning?
•What kinds of learner characteristics and learner conditions effect learning a second language?
•What is a ‘good language learner’?
•What does intelligence, aptitude, personality, motivation and attitude, learning styles and age have to do with second language acquisition?
•What is learner language and what is its significance?
•Is the path a second language learner takes towards fluency the same or different as the path of a first language learner? How is it the same or different?
•What kind of unique ‘mistakes’ do each group of language learners make?

While doing this, emphasis will be given to immersion education, content-based language education, bilingual development and the issues of returnees or third culture kids (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_culture_kids). As a father of two bilingual, third culture kids, this instructor believes he has some unique, first-hand insights into these issues. We will look at these selected topics through articles, newspapers and other materials provided by the instructor.

At the end of the year, students will be able to identify the major factors in language acquisition and how those factors are different for first and second language acquisition in children, adolescents and adults.

A message from your 先輩: “Learning is not only about what is in the textbook. You can freely make “misteakes”. You will also explore your knowledge and self through classroom activities and sharing your ideas with other students.”
