<概要/Course Content Summary> In the second semester you will continue your study of British musical theatre begun in the first semester. This time you will be looking at the period from the 1960s until 2000,and focusing in particular on the extraordinary careers of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. After writing the very successful Jesus Christ Superstar together,Lloyd Webber went on to compose Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, while Rice wrote songs for The Lion King and Heathcliff. Alongside these works, we'll study two haunting operas concerned with mental illness: Miss Donnithorne's Maggot and the world's first "neurological opera," The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat. <到達目標/Goals,Aims> This is a four-skills class: you will be doing a lot of reading, listening, and discussing, and in conclusion you will write a report on one of the musicals or operas you have studied in the class. By the end of the second semester you should have a good understanding of how British musical theatre developed in the modern period, and have further developed critical skills useful for appreciating and evaluating any theatrical work <授業計画/Schedule>
