<概要/Course Content Summary>

We will read short stories and poems, and watch a film, all of which have a comic, surreal, or a darkly humorous character. Poets and writers discussed in this class will be: James Tate, Ring Lardner, John Cheever, James Thurber, Allen Ginsberg, along with a film by Stanley Kubrick. Complete all assigned readings for each meeting before coming to class.

Our purposes are to acquiant ourselves with some of the stranger aspects of American literature (and film), and to learn a bit about American culture thereby.

I will distribute all readings via Doshisha's E-class system. Students are expected to download these in a timely fashion and bring them to class.
