<概要/Course Content Summary>

This English Skills class will focus on data-driven learning, an inductive approach to studying English using corpus software tools and websites. Students will learn to utilize several tools and websites to supplement their studies. This class can benefit motivated students of any level. 
 
The primary focus of this class will be on vocabulary, lexicogrammar, and academic writing. Students will learn how to utilize corpus tools to explore key vocabulary and collocations, investigate context, correct errors, and make their English writing more natural. Students will identify gaps they have in high-frequency academic vocabulary and build their own study materials using corpus tools.

At the end of this course, students will have a strong understanding of corpus tools and how to use them as a resource for language study. 
Students will know how to find authentic examples of language elements in use. 
Students will have filled in any gaps they have in high frequency academic vocabulary from corpus based vocabulary lists. 
Students will know how to extract important vocabulary from English language text. 
Students will know how to use corpus tools to improve their academic writing skills. 
Students will have developed greater learner autonomy and independence.

<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>

Assignments  60%  Completion of in-class corpus tools tutorial exercises. 
Completion of personalized vocabulary study material design, completion of vocabulary review exercises, completion of corpus tools extension exercises, on-time completion of writing assignments and revision assignments 
Attendance and Participation  40%  (Maximum of five absences) 
Active participation in class activities and discussions. 
Making an effort to engage and communicate with the teacher and students.

<備考/Remarks>

Computer skills are essential for this class. If you dislike typing or feel uncomfortable using a computer, then this class will be difficult for you. You will need access to a computer to complete weekly homework assignments. Bringing your own computer is highly recommended, but not required, as we will meet in a computer room every week. 
 
Attendance and participation are essential. You will not be able to pass if you miss more than 5 classes or do not actively participate in class.
