<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course uses analytic perspectives from social and cultural anthropology to explore the popular impact of Japanese culture in the US, and conversely to examine the influences of American culture on Japan. Rather than focusing on the over-examined perspectives of political, economic, diplomatic relationships between the U.S. and Japan, this course takes an alternative view to examine the ways these two cultures interact with one another through art, entertainment, food, sports, music, and popular culture.
The course begins with a brief historical overview of US-Japan interactions from the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry to Japan in the mid-19th century, and early impressions of Japanese travelers to the US and vice-versa, but the principal focuses will be on the mutual and reflective influences of each culture today.
