＜概要/Course Content Summary＞

近代以降の「古代中近東」研究は，18-20世紀当時「オリエント」と呼ばれていた，エジプトやメソポタミアを含む地域における植民地支配をきっかけに，ヨーロッパ諸国の間で高まった関心を発端としている。古代エジプトの研究は，18世紀終盤ナポレオン・ボナパルトのエジプト遠征をきっかけに始まった。彼はエジプトに学術調査団を同行させていた。その後，エジプト，レバント（地中海東部），古代メソポタミア地域において大英帝国が統治権を掌握し（レバントの一部はフランスが支配），これらの地域にイギリスやフランスの学者らがやって来るようになった。エジプトのヒエログリフやシュメール語，アッカド語といった古代言語の解読は，20世紀入って初めて大学における学術的分野として確立された。それ以前，19世紀における古代言語解読の試みは，主に個人によって行われていた。　
　この講義では，古代中近東研究の歴史的発展を辿り，今日この分野と関連している諸分野それぞれの特徴を理解する。また古代中近東研究で用いられる，文献学的視点からのテキスト分析，文芸批評や考古学，人類学などといった方法論に関する知見を深めることも目的である。　
　
The study of the “Ancient Near East” in modern times started when European interest in it has aroused following the colonial control of the regions of Egypt and Mesopotamia， which was called the “Orient” in the 18th to the 20th centuries. The study of ancient Egypt has begun with Napoleon Bonaparte’s invasion of Egypt in the late 18th century， when he took along a large group of scientists. Later on British and French scholars entered this field as Great Britain assumed control of Egypt， parts of the Levant and the area of ancient Mesopotamia， while France controlled the rest of the Levant. The decipherment of ancient languages such as hieroglyphic Egyptian， Sumerian and Akkadian took place mainly by individuals during the 19th century until it became a formal field of study in universities in the 20th century. 　
This course will try to follow up the historical development of the study of the Ancient Near East， will define the different fields of study related to it today， and will explore the methodological tools used in the field of research: philological-textual and literary analysis， archaeology， anthropology and more.

The course will give an overview of methodologies applied in the study of ancient cultures in nowadays research. 　
この講義では，古代文化の研究において現在用いられている方法論を概観する。

Detailed readings will be given at the first class.

Classes will be conducted in English and Japanese. Final report can be submitted in Japanese.　
授業は英語と日本語で行われ，期末レポートは日本語で提出する。
