<概要/Course Content Summary>

Akkadian was one of the great languages of ancient times. It was a Semitic language used by the Assyrians and Babylonians from the third millennium BCE until around 300 BCE, mainly in Mesopotamia, the area between the rivers Euphrates and Tigris, and also some areas of North Syria. The name of the language - Akkadian - is derived from the city-state of Akkad, which was founded in the middle of the third millennium BCE by the king Sargon I, and which became the capital of a great empire. Though Akkad was destroyed, the name has continued to be used for millennia since. For centuries Akkadian has been the international medium of communication, the lingua franca or language of diplomacy in the Ancient Near East. This was one of the reasons why the Mesopotamian civilization has had a strong influence on other cultures in the Ancient Near East, including the Bible.

Goals,Aims>

The teaching this semester will cover the history of the language, its development and its different phases in different areas of the Fertile Crescent. It will also cover the origins of the language and its grammar, as part of the family of Semitic languages. Students will gain an understanding of how to evaluate ancient languages and how to use its acquired knowledge through research for the interpretation of other Semitic languages, especially Biblical Hebrew.
