<概要/Course Content Summary>

There is a growing recognition among business leaders around the world that human resource management (HRM) is pivotal to a company's international competitiveness. Without a highly developed pool of human resources, capital and technology could not be effectively or efficiently allocated from corporate headquarters to subsidiaries abroad. This course focuses on how effective global human resource management (GHRM) policies and practices can contribute to a company's international competitiveness. GHRM is considered in the context of strategic business objectives, culture, and complex forms of organizations such as international strategic alliances and joint ventures.

* how they can acquire a global mindset to prepare them for managing in a global context; 
* how they can make staffing decisions in a global context, including the identification of criteria to select the appropriate people for the positions in question; 
* how they can train and develop subordinates for managing in a global context, including interacting with peoples from other cultural backgrounds/environments; 
* how they can reap the benefits associated with multicultural work teams; 
* how they can design an effective remuneration program across international boundaries; 
* how they can develop the appropriate criteria for assessing employee performance across international boundaries; 
* how they can make the most use of skills and experience acquired by employees who have served abroad to enhance the firm's international competitiveness.

This module differentiates domestic HRM from global HR and shows how corporate strategic decisions often require HR input. This gives rise to the concept of strategic international human resource management (SIHRM).

This module examines how effective GHRM can contribute to the development of a global mindset of key personnel in the organization. Possession of a global mindset is pivotal to a firm’s international competitiveness. It explores the core competencies and skills required for successful managers in the Twenty-first century.

This module examines the various sources of human power supply as they relate to staffing decisions in a global context. The criteria for selecting people for key positions are identified and a comparative analysis is made of staffing policies and practices in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

This module examines the best practices to motivate managers to attain corporate objectives. In particular,it analyzes the different approaches to executive compensation

This module highlights an often-neglected aspect of GHRM, repatriation. Effective management of the repatriation process can increase key managers’ commitment to the organization and can facilitate the successful attainment of the company’s globalization efforts. The key elements of an effective repatriation program will be examined.

(実施回/ Week) 15  (内容/ Contents) June 3 (14:55 - 16:25): Conclusion and Review. This module summarizes the major issues pertaining to GHRM. Some useful guidelines are provided for exam preparation.  (授業時間外の学習/ Assignments)  

Each 3-hour module will comprise of (i) a one-hour lecture; (ii) a one-hour group presentation of an assigned case (each group of students will be assigned to a specific case); and (iii) one-hour discussion of the lecture/case. June 4 (9:00 – 10:30) - Exam.   
All the readings and cases used in the course are contained in the textbook. Because of time limitations, students are not required to read the entire text - the chapter assigned for a particular module is indicated in the course schedule. 

<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>

Contributions to the class including presentations, class discussions, attendance  25%   
Assignment  25%  Students will be organized into groups. Each group will be assigned to a case – the case will be presented in class and the group has to submit a written analysis of the case. 
Examination  50%  1-hour written exam on Saturday

Peter J. Dowling, Marion Festing,and Allen D. Engle , International Human Resource Management: Managing People in a Multinational Context, 6th edition. (Cenage Learning, 2013)

 

This book is one of the most comprehensive and up-to-date text on GHRM that is appropriate for use at the MBA level. It also contains cases that can be used in the course. Only selected chapters will be used in the course
